Ingredients

Water, maltodextrin, milk protein, vegetable oils (high oleic sunflower, canola, corn, MCT from palm kernel oil), minerals (potassium citrate, sodium citrate, magnesium phosphate dibasic, calcium phosphate dibasic, potassium chloride, potassium phosphate dibasic, zinc sulphate, manganese sulphate, cupric sulphate, sodium molybdate, chromium chloride, sodium selenate, potassium iodide), emulsifier, soy lecithin, stabilisers (E460, E466, E418), choline chloride, vitamins (C, E, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, B₆, B₂, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene, D₃, folic acid, K₁, biotin, B₁₂), taurine, L-carnitine.

Product Description

Osmolite Plus is a 1.2 kcal/ml complete, balanced, high energy liquid for special medical purposes. This ready-to-hang formula is designed for use under medical supervision and is suitable as a sole source of nutrition or as a nutritional supplement for adults and patients who cannot or will not eat sufficient quantities of everyday food and drink to meet their nutritional requirements.

The formula features a higher energy density than standard tube feeds, providing 1.2 kcal/ml to meet increased energy needs in a smaller volume. The protein content provides 18.4% of energy, with a blend of sodium caseinate (75.0%) and calcium caseinate (25.0%) as protein sources.

Osmolite Plus is unflavoured and fibre-free, with a moderate osmolality of 359 mOsm/kg H₂O. The formula has a low viscosity and will pass down a fine nasogastric tube. The carbohydrate source is 100% maltodextrin, providing easily digestible energy.

The fat blend includes high oleic sunflower oil (28.5%), canola oil (28.5%), MCT from palm kernel oil (19.0%), corn oil (19.0%), and lecithin (4.94%), providing essential fatty acids including linoleic acid and linolenic acid.

Osmolite Plus is nutritionally complete for vitamins and minerals in 1250ml for men aged 19-50 years (excluding electrolytes). The 1000ml Ready to Hang (RTH) format provides convenient and hygienic administration for tube feeding.

Suitable for people with diabetes provided that routine glucose checks are performed.

Usage Instructions

Directions for Use

• Ready for use
• Administer at room temperature for tube feeding
• The volume/flow rate should be adjusted to meet the patient's nutritional needs and tolerance. This product has a low viscosity and will pass down a fine nasogastric tube
• A Flexitainer enteral nutrition container may be used if decanting is necessary
• For gravity feeding, the use of a Flexiflo gravity gavage set is recommended
• An Abbott enteral feeding pump may be used in conjunction with the Abbott enteral feeding system where a more accurately controlled delivery of feed is indicated. An ambulatory system is available for use

Storage Instructions

• Store unopened at room temperature
• Avoid prolonged exposure to light
• Once opened, unused product should be resealed and stored in a refrigerator
• Unused contents should be discarded after 24 hours

Community Use - Prescriptions

Osmolite Plus can be prescribed on FP10 for the following indications:

• Disease-related malnutrition
• Total gastrectomy
• Short bowel syndrome
• Bowel fistulae
• Intractable malabsorption
• Pre-operative preparation of patients who are malnourished
• Proven inflammatory bowel disease
• Dysphagia

All prescriptions should be endorsed ACBS (Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances).

Available on the DPS (Drugs Payment Scheme) and GMS (General Medical Services) scheme in Ireland.

Precautions

• In patients receiving some medications there may be a risk of drug nutrient interactions (e.g. warfarin and vitamin K). Careful prescribing and monitoring practices will serve to reduce the risk (please refer to pharmacist)
• Patients should not make any additions to the feed without consulting their pharmacist or dietitian
• Unless recommended by a qualified healthcare professional, not intended for use in children
• When feeding to patients with dysphagia, please thicken the product as appropriate

Contra-indications

• Do not use in children under 1 year of age
• Not for use in galactosaemia
