Managing PKU and Metabolic Conditions
Phenylketonuria (PKU) and other inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) are rare genetic conditions that affect the body's ability to process certain nutrients. Managing these conditions requires strict dietary control and specialist nutritional products — often for life.
At NutriSip, we stock a range of metabolic products including PKU supplements, low-protein foods, and specialist formulas from leading manufacturers — all available for UK delivery.
What Is PKU?
PKU is a condition where the body cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine (Phe), which is found in most protein-containing foods. If Phe builds up in the blood, it can cause serious neurological damage. PKU is detected at birth through the newborn heel prick test and requires lifelong dietary management.
Other Inherited Metabolic Disorders
PKU is the most well-known IMD, but there are many others including maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), homocystinuria (HCU), tyrosinaemia, and glutaric aciduria. Each condition requires its own specific dietary restrictions and supplement regimen.
Dietary Management
Low-protein diet
Most IMDs require strict limitation of natural protein intake. This means avoiding or carefully measuring foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, bread, pasta, and pulses. Permitted amounts vary by condition and individual tolerance.
Amino acid supplements
Because natural protein is restricted, patients need to take specially formulated amino acid supplements to ensure they receive all essential nutrients. These come as drinks, powders, tablets, or bars and must be taken consistently throughout the day.
Low-protein food substitutes
Specialist low-protein versions of everyday foods — bread, pasta, flour, rice, and biscuits — help patients maintain a varied and enjoyable diet within their restrictions.

Tips for Managing IMDs at Home
Plan meals in advance: Knowing your Phe or protein allowance for the day makes it easier to spread intake across meals and avoid going over limits.
Keep a food diary: Recording everything consumed helps your metabolic team adjust your diet and supplements as needed.
Stock up on essentials: Running out of supplements or low-protein staples can be stressful. Set up regular orders to avoid gaps.
Stay in touch with your metabolic team: Regular blood tests and clinic appointments are essential for monitoring levels and adjusting treatment.
