Product Description

Ketocal 4:1 LQ is a Food for Special Medical Purposes for use under medical supervision. It is a very high fat, low carbohydrate, nutritionally complete liquid product containing a blend of oils, milk protein (casein and whey), supplemental amino acids, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and fibre. Supplemented with the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs) Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Arachidonic Acid (AA). A 4:1 ratio of fat to carbohydrate and protein. Ketocal 4:1 LQ is for the dietary management of children aged 1-10 years with drug resistant epilepsy or other conditions for which the ketogenic diet is indicated. It can be used as the sole source of nutrition for children aged 1-10 years and as a supplementary feed for children over 10 years. Ketocal 4:1 LQ is ACBS approved and prescribable on FP10 (GP10 in Scotland).

Indications

For enteral use only. For use in the dietary management of drug resistant epilepsy or other conditions for which the ketogenic diet is indicated. Ketocal 4:1 LQ is suitable as the sole source of nutrition for children aged 1-10 years, or for supplementary feeding over the age of 10 years.

Medical Supervision

Must only be used under strict medical supervision on the advice of a secondary care physician and/or dietitian with experience of the ketogenic diet. For enteral use only. Patients should be monitored closely for hypoglycaemia, renal stones, hyperlipidaemia and adequate growth.

Preparation Instructions

1. Ready to feed. Product is best served chilled and consumed immediately after opening
2. Intake to be determined by a clinician or dietitian only, and is dependent on the age, bodyweight and medical condition of the patient
3. To ensure that this high fat feed is tolerated when first introducing a ketogenic diet, a less concentrated feed or lower feed volume may need to be provided initially
4. Care should be taken to ensure adequate free fluids are still provided
5. For oral and tube feeding: Shake product vigorously for at least 5 seconds before use
6. For oral feeding the product is best served chilled and consumed immediately
7. For tube feeding it is recommended the tube is flushed with lukewarm water (approximately 37°C) between each feed

Storage

• Recommended storage between 4 - 25°C
• Do not freeze
• Once opened, Ketocal 4:1 LQ is best consumed immediately
• Shelf life: 12 months from date of manufacture when unopened

Important Notes

• The high fat content may cause gastrointestinal symptoms if introduced too rapidly; introduce gradually under medical supervision
• Suitable for use with standard feeding tubes (1.6mm bore or larger)
• Not suitable for parenteral use
• This is the highest ketogenic ratio (4:1) available and requires specialist medical supervision
