Ingredients

Product Description

Vital 1.5kcal is a 1.5 kcal/ml complete, balanced, peptide-based liquid feed specifically designed for patients with malabsorption and/or feed intolerance. This high-energy formula provides concentrated nutrition in a smaller volume, making it ideal for patients with increased energy needs or fluid restrictions.

The formula contains 70% MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) from palm kernel oil, which are more easily absorbed than long-chain fatty acids, making it ideal for patients with fat malabsorption. The protein is derived from whey protein hydrolysate (70%) and hydrolysed sodium caseinate (30%), providing a complete amino acid profile in an easily digestible form.

Manufactured by Abbott Laboratories Ltd, a global leader in clinical nutrition, Vital 1.5kcal is nutritionally complete for vitamins and minerals in 1000ml (excluding electrolytes, calculated using the UK Reference Nutrient Intake for men aged 19-50 years). The product has a low viscosity that will pass down a fine nasogastric tube, making it suitable for tube feeding administration.

Vital 1.5kcal is gluten-free, clinically lactose-free, and suitable for vegetarians. It is designed for enteral use only and should be administered at room temperature for tube feeding. With 18.0% of energy from protein and a non-protein calorie to nitrogen ratio of 114:1, it provides balanced nutrition for patients with malabsorption-related conditions. Suitable for people with diabetes provided that routine glucose checks are performed.

Usage Instructions

⚠️ FOR ENTERAL USE ONLY - This product is designed for tube feeding and must not be taken orally.

Administration Method

Ready for use. Administer at room temperature for tube feeding. The volume/flow should be adjusted to meet the patient's nutritional needs and tolerance. This product has a low viscosity and will pass down a fine nasogastric tube.

A Flexitainer enteral nutrition container may be used if decanting is necessary. For gravity feeding, use of a Flexiflo gravity gavage set is recommended. An Abbott enteral feeding pump may be used in conjunction with the Abbott enteral feeding system where a more accurately controlled delivery of feed is indicated. An ambulatory system is available.

Community Use - Prescriptions

Vital 1.5kcal can be prescribed on FP10 (GP10 in Scotland) for patients with conditions resulting in malabsorption including:

• Disease-related malnutrition
• Short bowel syndrome
• Intractable malabsorption
• Bowel fistulae
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Total gastrectomy
• Dysphagia
• Pre-operative preparation for patients who are malnourished

All prescriptions should be endorsed ACBS (Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances).

Storage & Directions

• Store unopened at room temperature and avoid prolonged exposure of the RTH container to light
• Ready for use. Open immediately prior to use
• Shake well before use
• Once opened, cover and place in a refrigerator, discarding any unused feed after 24 hours

Precautions

• In patients receiving some medications there may be a risk of drug nutrient interactions (e.g. warfarin and vitamin K). Careful prescribing and monitoring practices will serve to reduce the risk (please see pharmacist)
• Unless recommended by a qualified healthcare professional, not intended for use in children
• Patients should not make any additions to the feed without consulting their pharmacist or dietitian
• Many nutritional products contain sucrose and other sugars. It is important that patients who are taking supplements as sip feeds to observe good oral hygiene
• Suitable for people with diabetes provided that routine glucose checks are performed
